Sucre & Uyuni

5 december 2015 - San Pedro de Atacama, Chili

WWe all thought Sucre was a really nice city. There are many white houses and small streets. Their market was nice, very big with lots of fruits and other food. We went to a viewpoint to see the city from above and we visited some old houses. At some point we were just sitting in our hostel room when the immigration service came to check our passports and immigration papers. It was a bit weird to have the police knock on your door and ask for our passport!

From Sucre we went with the day bus to Uyuni, via Potosi. There are no direct busses. Uyuni itself is a small town in the middle of the desert, there isn't much to do there, so the only thing we did there is use it as a leaving point for our trip through the salt planes!

This trip started in the morning, together with 3 other people we went in a four-wheel-drive through an amazing landscape. Unfortunately, I had become sick that morning, most likely food poisoning. The first stop was at a train cemetery. There used to be a train service to Chile, but they stopped it and they left all the trains just at the railway. We could climb on the wagons and walk around them for a bit and then we moved on to a salt hotel. There was a statue of the logo of the Dakar rally, since it starts there. At some point during our trip we might see the end of the race. From here we could see the salt planes already! They weren't as white as we had expected, but they were cool anyway. After the salt hotel we went to an 'island' filled with huge cacti in the middle of the salt planes. This is the place where we had lunch and where we made some of the strange perspective photos. More difficult than we thought, but some of them became really nice! When our driver started to become impatient we went on to the place where we would stay for the night. Before and during sunset we took of for the salt planes once more to make some more pictures. At night, we could see many stars, there was no light to disturb the view at all!

The next morning we left early to visit several beautifully coloured lagoons, filled with many flamingos! There was a reddish coloured lagoon, a white one and a green one. We walked around some of them. It was cool to see all these differently coloured lakes in an environment of sand, rocks and mountains. During the driving we saw a lot of mountains, hills, volcanoes, and rocky sand planes. In the evening we walked around a lagoon close to our sleeping place, and it was so cold and windy when we walked back! We were wearing our hats and winter jackets and it was still quite chilly. The hot tea #with rum for some# was very welcome!

The last day consisted of geysers and hot springs. The geysers smelled bad but looked awesome! At some point we couldn't find some of our group members because they were covered by the steam of one of the geysers. With -2 C we put on our swimming clothes and took a quick bath in the hot springs where we sang 'zie ginds komt de stoomboot' and 'Sinterklaas kapoentje' . After this we took of to the border of the next country in our trip: Chile!
